Broadband Internet offers faster connection compared to dial up and other types of Internet access. The ‘broader’ bandwidth of the Broadband connection is the reason for the speedier service. One can choose from different types of devices in order to set up broadband Internet connection. The most common devices that are used to initiate a broadband connection are Modems and Wireless access devices. Based on these devices, the connection can be divided into two types and have specific features. The modem device technology enables a computer to transmit data over the Internet connection. Modems help convert digital information of the computer into analog signals which is known as modulation; and converts analog signals sent over the telephone, cable line or satellite connection into digital signals that is understood by the computer in demodulation process. There are different types of broadband connection and each connection functions efficiently on specifically designed modems. Cable Modems, DSL Modems, Satellite Modems, Fiber Optics Modems are some such types of modems. Cable Modems transmit carrier signal through television cable lines while DSL Modems utilize standard phone connections. Satellite Internet and lately Fiber Optics Connection are the chief modes adopted for Internet access in Afghanistan and similar countries with comparatively lesser facility. These connections make use of Satellite modems and Fiber Optics modems for efficient functioning. The modem is connected to the computer machine through wired or wireless connection depending on the type of the modem. Wired Modems are physically connected to the computer through Ethernet cables while wireless modems send signals directly to the computer which is received by the machine’s wireless signal receiver.
