| A great many school rugby tours have ended up in Germany, (normally whilst beating them), but if you are lucky enough to go, then consider a stop off at Bavaria. Monaco of Bavaria is located at the foot of the Alps in southern Germany and is the third German city after Berlin and Hamburg. Its origins date back to medieval times and its growing importance has made it the seat of the Wittelsbach dynasty, who reigned over Bavaria until 1918. Buildings signifying its glorious past still remain as important symbols, especially the magnificent royal palaces that are still visited by millions of tourists each year. It was a stronghold of the Nazis during World War II, where Monaco was almost completely destroyed during the conflict, but was rebuilt with a meticulous work that has managed to preserve the appearance of pre-war city. Today Monaco of Bavaria is a fascinating metropolis and quiet, which combines elegance, sobriety, but also vibrant atmosphere that made it a favourite destination of tourists visiting Germany. It is no coincidence that its most famous event is the Oktoberfest beer festival that attracts thousands every autumn. It is filled with the city's national drink enthusiasts who gather to revel in the world-famous breweries and beer gardens. It’s not really a point that you should add on your school sport tours, but is certainly a nice little diversion for the adults. Also very important cultural aspect of the city, which boasts many museums of great importance, as well as a concert season which is respectable. For nature lovers there is plenty of choice, including the beautiful city parks and the wonderful scenery of the surroundings, all the way up to the Alps. They are a nice little diversion if you are knocked out of the school sport tours, but still have time to spare. Monaco of Bavaria is a city with a robust economy, which is based not only on tourism, but also on sound industrial and commercial. They have, among others, Siemens, BMW, Allianz Insurances, etc. If you do take any school rugby tours through Germany, then be aware that their football is better than their rugby. Their football team is world class, but their rugby team has never qualified for the Rugby World Cup. In fact, the only real achievement that have gotten was a silver medal in the 1900 Olympics. Their aim is to become a world class team, but they must first qualify for the World Cup. They have set a modestly realistic goal of being able to qualify for the 2019 world cup in Japan. Never the less, if you are not in Germany to admire the sports tours or the Rugby then take advantage of the culture and the country. Germany as a whole is now a powerhouse of industry and one of the most secure economies on the planet, so even though it may cost you a pretty-penny to visit, it will at least be good value for money. Their nightlife has really evolved, and despite their strong economy, it is still very reasonably priced. Many European people go over their for the weekend for a party and then come home early Monday morning. |
